Clay County Home Lockout

Getting locked out of your home is never a situation anyone expects. This is a list of ways you can gain entry to your home with minimal tools available. NOTE: These methods may cause damage to your property and should be performed with care.
  • Through your door window – Borrow a screw driver from a neighbor, preferably a flathead, and insert it into the bottom pane of the window. Slide it around a bit and exert an upward force. Pull out the window, trying not to damage the door frame. Now put your hand through and reach the handle to open your door. If there is any broken glass, be extremely careful, a trip to the hospital is more costly than broken glass.
  • Credit card method – This method will only work on spring locks, and NOT deadbolts. Spring bolts are the ones typically found in the door handle, and deadbolts are the ones above that. Use a cheap plastic card. Use something that doesn't link to your money or bank accounts, something that is easily replaceable. Library cards, membership card, etc. are all ideal because damaging them isn't a loss to you, especially since you may not get in. Wedge the card between the door and frame. Hold the card flush against the door frame and look for the smallest part of the lock. Push the card in and bend it away from the doorknob. When you feel it slide the lock back, turn the handle and open the door.
Again these methods should be done with care and some expectation of damage. If you are not confident in this, or do not want to deal with the repairs, it is a good idea to call a locksmith.
